It would seem that you were draining the battery while driving it. I went through a similar scenario. I replaced the alternator brush pack and the battery before I discovered that the ground wire was no good even though it appeared fine. You can find that out easily if you have a voltmeter. Get the ar jumped and read the voltage across the battery. Run a wire from any ground point on the alternator to any ground point on the frame. If the reading is more than 12 volts you are good to go.
