the back of the e-code lamp housing (about the size of a mayonnaise jar lid). the lightbulb is held in with a clip, vs. the small cap/lug arrangement on the standard hella units.

daniel stern's lighting site is a good source of information on lamps and lamp types. he also sells an upgraded wiring/relay kit so you can "bolt in" the e-codes if you get them.

the H4 (or 9004, or H3, or any other) designation is the type of light bulb it is. they're application (lamp type) specific. the stock lamps are halogen type. there isn't a led or xenon type lamp available for the C900's that i'm aware of.

the e-codes do fit right in in place of the standard hella units. most used hella lamps in junkyards appear to be cloudy to some extent. there are a few that are still clear, and you can do a search on cleaning the glass of the lamps on the site here.

if you want the yellow tint, you could get the hella pilot fog lamps with yellow lenses. of course they only work when low beams are on. and they're not designed as driving lights. i find the more blue light of xenon's very annoying and glarey in my rearview mirror, and blinding when it's oncoming. i also find that in inclement weather (rain, etc.), the blueish tint doesn't help me see any better.

new hella's while expensive, may make life brighter for you, as they will not be sand blasted, chipped, cloudy, etc.

electrical work isn't all that bad once you get stuck in to it. the not knowing is part of the fear of doing something wrong. if you are patient and work methodically it's something most people can do. a little reading up on automotive electrics wouldn't hurt, and there are haynes type manuals out there about wiring (look in auto part stores). there are a few basic basic things like disconnecting the battery before working and whatnot, but many things are common sense.

hope that answers some of the questions you had, sorry it was so long/involved lol.

mark :-)
