Saabjunkie -- I read your post and thought, did I have a few too many and write that last night?
My 90 SPG does the EXACT same thing. Hot underhood / exterior temps (95 or so +).. and after driving for 30 mins or so, every time now (used to be intermittent)... pump wont stop running, both ABS lights come on, fluid level is high. Its almost as if the thing is pumping... but whatever is supposed to "open up" to let it pressurize the accumulator isn't opening up. So its pumping against a closed passageway (so to speak)... and then the pump will overheat and shut off. when it cools down, its fine.
I have pulled fault codes... the one I get on mine is for MAIN VALVE FAULT. I can't remember the code sequence but I can pretty much guarantee you have the same problem. I initially thought it was a relay issue, a wiring issue, a ground issue, etc. Actually I still believe its some sort of ground issue but I have cleaned/removed/reset the grounds on the ABS pump / body assembly to no avail -- same thing. Reason I believe its a ground issue is that as the ABS assembly heats up, something isnt making a good connection inside of it, and whatever signal that is supposed to happen so that the main valve opens and closes isn't happening. Or the main valve itself is sticking due to warpage, etc.
I also have a new (well 2 years old now) ABS accumulator. Actually I swapped another one in too just to check, still same thing.
I have not been able to track down what this is. Unfortunately i had an ankle replacement about 6 weeks ago so the SPG has been sitting since early June (cant drive stick but i drive other cars left footed). So I've kind of given up for the summer.
If you search some of my old posts, I have posted about it a # of times. I have a used ABS unit out of a 93 that I am going to throw in mine some day, I am hoping that fixes it.
The really odd thing about this is that I drove the call all fall, winter and spring and it never did it once. As soon as it gets hot, bam. this has been happening to me on my 90 SPG for the past 3 summers including this one.
