Release the hand brake and then with the car on level ground and in park(if auto) or reverse (if stick), car not running, get the handy Saab pliers out of the tool kit if it's still there or a pliers or channel lock then have your son lay on the ground and look at the rear calipers at the inside of the rear wheels, one on each side. You can see a lever attached to the caliper with a cable in a slot that activates the parking brake. Have him grab the lever with the pliers and pivot it towards the rear of the car. I had to do this at a neighbor's house so I could drive their car to the shop and replace a rear caliper. If one of them noves freely it's the other one that's bad.
