1979-1993 & 94 Conv [Subscribe to Daily Digest] |
After hearing noises coming from my transmission, and thinking about all the other nickel & dime things I need to do to this car, I started thinking about a new ride, especially after getting a raise at work. I have been eyeing the new GM convertibles, the Saturn Sky & Pontiac Solstice, so I had to give one of them a try at least. They are great cars and are a total blast to drive. The turbo model reminds me a lot of driving my 900 ragtop, but the car falls short in many areas. First, is the total lack of cargo space. I've been absolutely amazed how much junk I can cram into the trunk, and when that's filled, I can start on the back seat! The Solstice cannot tow a trailer either, and I'm used to hooking up my little Hobie Cat to my 900 for a trip to the beach.
I looked at some of the 4-seat convertibles out there for more cargo room, and none of them even seem to be as "perfect" either. The Sebring seems creaky and rattly, and I'm afraid of it's Mitsubishi engine...it runs a lot rougher anyways. The Solara is a step up with a much tighter build quality, but it's engine seems to be sluggish in the bottom end, and the suspension is too soft. I think I need to be an over 60 Yanni listening baby-boomer to drive one too! Neither one of these are rated for trailer towing either! I haven't tried the Pontiac G8 yet either, I'm not sure if it's big engine will be thirstier than my 900 though.
I also need to try out the new 93 ragtops, but from what I've noticed at the ones I've sat in at the car show, they seem to be just simply Chevy Malibus with turbo motors and leather seats. They seemed cramped inside compared to my 900, and more based on being gadget-loaded versus being a refined sports-luxury car...not quite to the extent GM did with the Cadillac Cimarron (Chevy Cavalier) but headed in that direction.
So, I think I'll stick with enjoying my near- 20 year old car, and instead of making car payments, I'll make shop payments and get it back in shape!
