Here's how to change the shocks... on an older c900 where you are throwing the old shocks away. This by the way is the technique that every saab tech I have seen uses... this is not some hacky technique or risky manuever.. it's the way to do it:
FRONTS REMOVAL:
1) Remove the lower nut holding the shock on.
2) Take the shock... bend it outwards at a 90 degree angle from the car. The shaft will bend. Then bend it back the other way. like a coathanger, bend it back and forth a couple times... it'll break. Remove the nut/top of the shaft from the upper mounting hole in the engine compartment
FRONTS INSTALL:
1) Put shock in place through the upper mounting hole, with the bushings placed appropriately
2) Screw on the washer/nut hand tightne
3) Using the Lisle tool snug it down. This works on either ABS (1990+) or 1989 and earlier cars... you may have to move the expansion tank bottle depending on the car/hoses.
4) The Lisle tool grips those flatteneed ovals on the tops of the front shock shafts and you will be able to do it no sweat.
5) Then with a floor jack underneath the shock's lower mount... put the lower shock mount on the shaft on the control arm. Tighten the nut.. don't go too crazy you can break that threaded shaft and then its.... unfortunately... a new lower ccontrol arm.
Use the same tool to snug down the top mount of the rear shocks.. you should be all set.
