Voltage Regulator / Brushes Replacement Approach Posted by 88SPGClone [Email] (#1317) [Profile/Gallery] (more from 88SPGClone) on Sat, 30 Aug 2008 15:02:18 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Came home a couple weeks ago and the Battery light came on in the middle of the ride. I have the 3 panel gauges. It was registering around 9 to 10 on my gauge. I parked in garage and finally got around to replacing the voltage regulator / brushes.
I'm not too keen on removing the alternator. So I searched the board and talked to my indy and recommended the following. However (I stubbled on the xMas string which I thought was clever and made the job quite easy).
Pretty easy...here's what I did (however I'm certain others have good approaches):
1. Removed battery cables
2. Removed oil filter
3. Removed oil pressure sending unit (mine is a big mushroom type)
4. Loosened the alternator (so I could move up and down) and belts so I could gain access to 1 of the regulator screw
5. Removed voltage regulator
A. Took the new Bosch voltage regulator and tied down the brushes with xMas style waxy string (about the width of the brushes). Basically over the tops of the brushes and tied a knot right in front of the Bosch plate. This held the brushes down so I could insert them into the alternator.
B. Inserted the voltage regulator carefully and screwed it down leaving some/little play.
C. Cut the xMas waxy string at the bottom of the Bosch plate and pulled the waxy string out and over the brushes. No string shaved off and it came out perfectly.
D. Screwed down the voltage regulator and reversed the above.
Started the car and everything was back to normal. I might add the alternator was replaced 160k ago / 14 years ago. I not certain but many shops would have simply replaced the alternator due to age...however this was way simpler, cost little and worked for my circumstances.
