Pretty sure it's not in the crankshaft thrust bearings. Put new thrust bearings and end play was to spec along with the new Vandervell rod and main bearings which were mic'd and plastigaged.
I didn't know the tensioner block pumped up to relieve the slack in the primary chains. The motor did not get run but about 1/2 an hour and did not have the drive shafts in so the tranny did not run but in neutral for that time. I'm thinking that with not having added the 1/2 qt. into the chain-wheel case and not running it to pump up the tensioner might be the cause of the knock.
The thing is I need to pull the engine back out because the tranny gasket failed to seal, have a minor leak below the oil pump. When that happened I decided to put the project aside for a while and get into the '92 GT Mustang I was freshening up for my son. That's about done now and was going to get back to the mistress as my better half calls it. Just was looking to see what to look for when it gets pulled back out. Will take your advise though and since the trans will be dropped I'll spin the trans-axle and check for any knocking and double check the throw out bearing.
