To quote both the 1979-1985 and 1981-1993 Specifications manuals from Saab:
"Grade of oil:
SAE 10W/30 or SAE 10W/40 engine oil, or
SAE EP 75 API GL4 or API GL 5"
The 1975-1980 99 manual goes into a bit more detail:
"Up to and including 1979 model:
Engine oil SAE 10W30 or 10W40 as
per API service SE. Or Saab Special Transmission Oil "Esso SE 26" (Saab Special Transmission Oli does not need to be changed).
As from 1980 model:
Saab Special Transmission Oil "ESSO
SE 26"
(-Saab Special Transmission Oil does
not need to be changed
-Saab Special Transmission Oil can be
mixed with other transmission and en-
gine oils, e.g. when topping-up if the
special oil is not available.
-The special oil should be used when
refilling after repair work.)"
That's ALL straight from the book.
As for synthetic motor oils used in a Saab 99/C900 manual transmission, later (90s) 900 owner's manuals stated "not synthetic" right after the 10W30/10W40 listing for the gearbox.
The SAE 75 was only available in the US, as far as I know, via Saab. It was not available commercially.
My personal experience is that the SAE 75 has been the best thing to go into the gearboxes I have owned, when I can get the stuff,
My personal experience has been that Redline makes the box shift better for a while, then works its way back to mediocre after a time (months to years). And Mobil 1 Engine oil is at least partially responsible for a ring & pinion failure on my 1984 900t (which had only 135 HP, folks...). When I took the box apart, all the oil left inside and on the parts didn't feel very slippery at all. I believe that the high pressures in the gearbox (teeth against teeth) worked to deteriorate the oil.
Synthetic gear oils or synthetic manual transmission oils do not have that problem.
