How to avoid cracking cheap plastic radiators?

Despite being very careful to avoid over-torquing the radiator drain plug and upper radiator hose connection, I've got coolant dripping from both after doing some work that involved draining the system. I turned the drain until the plug just butted against the radiator, and I turned the driver on the hose clamp using just my thumb and index finger, and still managed to crack it.
The coolant drips are coming from inside the drain plug's outlet, not the radiator itself. No cracks in the upper hose, the leak is from the end of hose. I'm not inclined to tighten any more (at least until I have a spare on hand), unless either of those sounds like I haven't tightened enough.
Any tricks or recommended torque numbers to avoid cracking a new one?
