The battery light is a misnomer - it's an alternator light. The light comes on when the alternator voltage is less than the battery voltage. So the alternator isn't putting out the right voltage.
You mentioned condensation. Was the AC still working OK? Did the power steering feel OK? Any squealing from the firewall area? If the belts are slipping (there are two there) the alternator light will come on, the AC won't work right, and the power steering may or may not work properly. And likely you'll get a squeal.
Stick a voltmeter on the battery terminals - car off, it should be in the mid 12 volt range. Start the car. If the voltage doesn't go up to 13 volts, AND you can see the alternator pulley spinning, the next thing to do is replace the voltage regulator (bolted into the back of the alternator). It's possible that a diode in the alternator failed, which would require rebuild/replacement of the alternator. But start with the VR.
