God bless 3M, they make amazing products.
I spent a lot of time on 3M websites trying to find a product that was just the same as the hood protector, but couldn't find one. There are a lot of aircraft tapes identified as to color only by a military number that might work if you could find a black one. Matte finish seemed to be the norm.
The hood protector material, sort of a semigloss with a pebble grain texture to it, didn't show up anywhere, and the "automotive" section only had clear hood protector-gravel shield products listed. But 3M plainly was still making this tape as the later 900s used something similar.
I left email messages for a couple of 3M employees but got nowhere.
As to the stresses, I think they're not really as great as you'd think:
My girlfriend's brother recalls writing his name in the dust on the wing of a plane when he was in the USAF; on landing it was still there.
