First and foremost, this ain't no Toyota...
Double clutching is Fine, and I occasionally do this when feeling especially nice to her when I down shift into 2nd.
However, shifting should be smooth as long as your timing is good:
Acceleration: Depress clutch at the same moment as taking off gas, shift smooth-fast motion, sould go right in: if you wait, its harder to get in.
Decelleration: Ease your shifter into the gear, NEVER PUSH. It'll go in, when its ready.
There may be issues with your tranny, there may be a motor mount going bad, you may just think that this is a new abusable car. Its at least 17 years old.
