Paul Bob,
In 1990-91 the cone angle was changed slightly so you have to be sure that you are using the correct balk rings for early versus late transaxles. The moly coated rings were used in the second and third gear positions with non-coated rings in the first and fourth position. those rings were otherwise identical and some guys use only non-coated rings as there is suspicion that the moly coating flakes off and damages bearings. As far as I know all the early (pre '91) gearboxes use the rings with the "square dots". I recall that the "half moon" dots are for the later C900 gearboxes (post '91) but short of digging through parts I'm not absolutely sure about that. The best bet for installing new balk rings is just to order by the Saab part number. If you have a pre '91 gearbox the (non-coated) 1st and 4th rings are part #8719924 and the (coated) 2nd and 3rd rings are #8719916. For a '91-'93 gearbox it's #8728529 (1st and 4th) and #8728461 (2nd and 3rd). The fifth gear balk ring is entirely different from the others but remained unchanged through all production years and is part #8344772. It has no "square", "half moon" or any other dots on it. Cheers
