From the post, I take it you lost between 1 and 1.5 quarts in 1500 miles.
A quart per 1K miles on a 16 year old car isn't awful. If you are burning it evenly at that rate, it wouldn't show up a smoke. If you were leaking it, you'd probably notice a small puddle or so.
I'd guess you've got a little leakage past the valve seals. I put that level of oil consumption higher than normal, but acceptable. It's not enough to send out smoke clouds or foul an O2 sensor or Cat. The cost to go in and fix it just to fix it is unnecessary - hundreds of dollars versus $7.50 for three extra quarts of oil between oil changes.
I would, however, make a point of checking the oil level every week. Pick a day and check the oil once a week. You don't want to find yourself 1.5 quarts down in an engine that takes around 4 quarts. If the oil consumption speeds up, you don't want to get taken by surprise, where Surprise is the oil light coming on.
As I heard on a TV show a few weeks back, there are two kinds of surprises - Birthday Party and Pearl Harbor. The oil light isn't the Birthday Party kind.
