My 1990 900 convertible has always rattled in the rear, sort of sounding like someone left a bunch of wrench sockets and other tools rolling and bouncing in the trunk well when bumps or rough roads are traveled down. For the longest time, I couldn't figure out why the car was making this noise...all the bolts were tight in the back. I bought a bunch of bushings from E Europarts, and I set out to install them today. I first started out with the upper "dogbone" piece that goes from the top of the spindle to the frame rail just behind the wheelwell. I believe the official name for this part is the "track rod". When I took the piece out, I noticed that the bushings were actually in good shape. The problem was that the bolt was swimming in the center hole in the bushing.
A trip to Home Depot from some nice grade 8 bolts and new nylock nuts, and the problem is solved! Just for kicks and grins, I took the various other bolts off the car's rear suspension and inspected the bushings. I only had to replace 1 bushing on the panhard rod, the rest were in great shape, but the bolts were all worn down, bent or otherwise damaged in some way.
With all these fresh bolts on the rear of the car, it feels like the back end is handling a bit tighter now, and the nice thing is that the car is now as quiet as a brand new car when I go over a string of potholes and patches.
BTW, when I was back there, I noticed that my car has the bright blue shocks on it. Are these the Bilstein HD shocks, or just the regular Bilsteins? There were no markings on them stating what they were.
