Had similar problems last year with my '88 900S NA. In my case it was the slip rings on alternator ($55 local refurb), but a more proximal cause is worn brushes on the voltage regulator (VR) module of the alternator. Search "brushes alternator" on the board and you'll find plenty of links to a DIY replacement that might cure your woes for <$10. The next step up is to replace VR-- not much money and doable without removing (or even moving) the alternator. Finally, there is the possibility that the thin green wire that leads to the alt warning light bulb in your dash (or even the bulb itself) is bad.
All will lead to the symptoms you describe. Ari on this board has many excellent posts that will aid your diagnosis.
