1979-1993 & 94 Conv [Subscribe to Daily Digest] |
I just installed a new replacement Bosal catalytic converter in my 1989 900T (249,000 mi) last night. The original cat is still in good shape other than the fact that the mounting flanges disintegrated. Installation was relatively uneventful since I had already previously replaced the mounting hardware with stainless steel. I did want to mention though that the note on the eeuroparts web site states the following:
"On some 90-93(and 94 conv) 900 2.1L models, the factory catalytic converter is slightly longer(1 1/2"- 3")". It turns out the factory cat on my 89' was 1.25" longer than the replacement Bosal. I was amazed that by loosening the exhaust clamp at the muffler (OEM Saab system) and by hammering away on the rear catalytic flange (with a piece of wood in-between) I was able to slide the intermediate pipe out of the muffler by that 1.25". I attribute that to the fact that I used high-temp nickel anti-seize on the pipes when assembled, and the fact that the OEM clamps don't indent the pipes when tightened like a U-bolt clamp does. So the point of my story is that I lucked out, but you may not, so be aware if purchasing this cat. Other items of interest:
- Both cat mounting flanges rotate, so you can orient the cat the way you want regardless of the intermediate pipe orientation.
- The new cat comes with a small heat shield welded to the bottom
- There is a wide flange sticking out from the sides of the cat where it was welded together that almost hits the Saab heat shield and in-fact does rattle on my car at idle.
- My mounting hardware barely was long enough due to the new flange arrangements. I would recommend buying new SS longer hardware if doing this job.
