It's a 900S Notchback Posted by LIFETIMEOFSAABS [Email] (#2) [Profile/Gallery] (more from LIFETIMEOFSAABS) on Tue, 28 Oct 2008 13:33:05 In Reply to: Another.. What do you think, Jim, Sun, 26 Oct 2008 20:19:14 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The notchback was imported in 1985 and 1986. The 1985 models were 8-valve, non-turbo powered. The 1986 models received the new at the time 16-valve engines. They are pretty rare as US models. They were popular in Europe and were sold until 1992. They had turbo and "aero" configurations overseas.
All of the US notchbacks were S models. None had turbos. The car was discontinued in the US in favor of the convertible. Legend has it that Saab told then Saab USA President Bob Sinclair that he had to take a percentage of the two-door notchback models for sale. His response was that they need to be S models to even have a chance of selling.
Early sales were dismal. Bob Sinclair told Saab he'd then sell as many two doors as they wanted as long as the roof was cut off. To that end, Sinclair engaged the services of ASC (American Sunroof Co) to develop a proposal to convert the notchback into convertibles. His proposal was met with a counter proposal from the factory in Sweden - who based a convertible design on the 3-door hatchback.
In any case, the notchback version won with support from Saab's Finland manufacturing line and the classic 900 convertible as we know it was born...
