Alternator Ground Wire and Hard/No Start?

My 92 900S has been slow starting for a while, I usually had to crank it 2 or 3 times, then it would start when I released the key. Today (a cold morning) it cranked slowly again, but in the end didn't start, and to make things a bit more exciting, smoke came from the engine! I only had a minute to look (before switching to the backup car), and saw that a wire on the left side of the engine was overheating.

Searching here indicates that the wire is probably the alternator ground wire. My hunch is I've got engine to chassis ground problems so this path gets too much current. So my questions are: 1) What is likely to cause overcurrent in this line, and 2) what ground points are there, and what is the procedure for cleaning them up.
