The reason why I ask this is because I am still hearing what I believe is inner driver noise after replacing the axle shafts. I posted on here a while back about a noise when applying power that is in rhythm with say a helicopter, sort of a chop-chop-chop at 35-45 mph, but the pitch is more like a VCR or a cassette player rewinding. In fact, that's the closest way to describe it From what I can gather, it's rhythm seems to be about 3X the rotation speed of the wheels. When decelerating, I don't hear the noise, but I feel the shifter vibrating in about the same frequency.
The noise seems to be getting worse over the past month or two, and replacing the axles didn't seem to change the problem any (one axle had a broken CV boot however). I don't think it's a pinion bearing, although I hear the noise most pronounced in 3rd , 4th, and 5th gears. The transmission also shifts perfect. Because of this, I don't think it's a pinion bearing issue, and also because of recommendations on this site when I posted about it before.
Could this be a differental gear problem? If so, how hard is that to fix, and can the diff be worked on without removing the transmission from the car (read, high labor costs)
