Hi again and thanks in advance for any input you might have on this issue of mine.
In a previous post I mentioned that I recently purchased my first SAAB, an 88 SPG. When I purchased the car I was able to get full boost and go well into the ‘orange’ zone. However, the small tapered hose (3/8” to 5/16”) that leaves the throttle body cracked of me and the car overheated. The temperature gage nearly went to 90% but once I noticed that and stopped the car (middle of nowhere, in the desert—ouch, and not fun) there was still coolant coming out of the hose for say about 3 minutes or so. I was able to repair the hose and drive on and I THINK I was able to still get full boost. I’m not really sure because I ending up babying the car for days after because I was a long way from home. One other thing, I accidently shifted the positive battery connector and had it touching the metal section of the heat shield (car died after driving it for 5 minutes). I’m mentioning these happening as background to the issue I’m about to describe...
So, here’s what’s happening. I’m not able to get full boost and the turbo gauge only goes up to about 80% into the yellow zone, never reaching the ‘orange zone.’ I’ve replace the PCV check valve, the PCV bushing on the valve cover, the valve cover nipple, and about four vacuum hoses that come off the throttle body, plus this weekend I’ll replace the turbo inlet hose and I ‘welded’ the copper nipple that comes off the throttle body (nipple was loose). Yesterday when I was taking it for a test drive to see if what I did helped with boost I noticed something odd—it’s this: after trying to get to the full boost zone I noticed a faint clicking sound (sounded like a distant jack hammer). The sound stopped when I applied the brakes. Could this somehow be related to my low boost issue?
Of note: A mechanic told me the check the APC by applying the brakes with the key ‘on’ but engine not started. He said that if I heard a clicking sound when I applied the brakes that it probably means the APC is working fine. I do hear a clicking sound when I apply the brakes.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks, Jason
ps. I've attached a photo of my engine--does everything look in order?
