I've owned 4 automatics but all were turbos (I've also owned 2 manuals). They are quicker off the line that a manual because there is no turbo lag between gears. Even though they are quicker, it doesn't feel that way however...it doesn't necessarily give you that "toss you back in the seat" acceleration.
They are louder at highway speed because of the gearing and gas mileage will suffer. My '87 would get 28 mpg, but the rest of my cars get 22-24 combined mileage.
If properly maintained, the automatic will last a good long time just as a manual tranny. My now daily driver has 220,000 miles on it and it runs and shifts as new. It was driven properly (no smokey burnouts) and maintenance was completed on time. That however is the key to longevity regardless of automatic vs. manual.
Check the automatic tranny fluid....if it smells burnt or is a bad color, walk away from the car. If the fluid is brand new, I'd be tempted to walk away too because it could indicate a problem that they tried to fix.
