3 Head Gaskets.
1 Transmission at 200,000 miles.
22 sets of tires.
600 quarts of synthetic oil (he only used synthetic).
And two tanker trucks worth of premium gasoline (he only used premium).
I've not heard anything about clutches and brakes - though I'm sure there were a lot of them.
Other than that, the engine was largely untouched.
The owner's name is Peter Gilbert.
He's from the Milwaukee area (as am I)
The biggest thing was his driving style. Clutch out, shift one to two, two to three, three to four, four to five - drive 300 miles, brake, down shift, turn car off.
He drove 1,001,385 miles and parked it in the Wisconsin Automotive Museum where it sits today.
He did that in 17 years.
That's over 58,900 miles per year.
You can't do that in city stop-n-go traffic.
If he averaged 45mph, he would have been in the car for 1,309 hours per year. If he averaged 45 hours per week of work, with 3 weeks of vacation, he would have been been spending about 60% of his working hours in his car driving.
So when I hear "mostly highway miles", I am always suspect. But in this case - I think it was the incredibly high percentage of highway driving vs. city driving that took the car that far.
It didn't die either - it just rusted out. The engine and trans are still strong.
