just random thinking here, the outer race is secured to the steering knuckle with 2 c-clips on both sides. the inner hub (wheel hub)slides fully through the center of the bearing. the torque would effect the inner hub wall to axle nut washer........ i see the hub might not have been slid fully through the inner bearing which left a small amount of space say 1/16th, when the axle nut was torqued it tightened washer to inner wheel-bearing wall. leaving the hub to shift the 1/16th of an inch.
