Landjet, has it right. heater control mostlikely the issue.I would have the work done at home if you have time, but I would not have it done away from home as, it usually requires or possibly requires removal of heater core, but there are some experts taht claim to be able to do this in 30 minutes through the left speaker grill (when removed of course) It will require about a $65 part. Here's what I'd do if you are rushed for time (the local guy can't work you in before your trip). Buy the part, many on ebay. take it on trip as well as these parts. Find a u shaped metal connector about the same size as your heater hoses going through the firewall by the brake booster or ABS on firewall. If the heater control valve goes out on the road. Disconnect the two hoses from the heater control valve at the firewall and insert the U shaped connector. You can also use aboyut 8 inces of hose and two metal hose connectors but will need two extra clamps.Anyway. you will get cold if myou have to do this emergency repair, but not stranded. I did a turbo replacement away from home once with a autorized Saab dealer in Pa. Got back to Ky for a month and entire engine went down as he never removed pan and removed turbo parts from oil pan and screen clooged causes engine failure. Thats right the guy in Pa denied liability. Get your work done at home when possible. good luck
