The battery appears to be low in charge, or has a bad connection. The alternator has nothing to do with starting the motor.....after the motor is running, that's when the alternator does it's job....recharging the battery and supplying power.
Recharge the battery while you crimp a new spade connector onto the wire. The spade connector is crushed onto the wire and many handy people may have one in their collection of stuff. If you need to buy some, they are very affordable and readily available (autoparts stores, walmart, K-mart, boatUS, hardware stores and Home Depot). Strip (the wire) and crush the connector onto the wire. Push onto the back of the alternator...be sure you are securely engaged electrically and not off to one side.
Here is my summary of events:
1. Field wire becomes broken from vibration or rough handling during an oil change
2. Alternator puts out minimal power as the field wire has an intermittent connection
3. Battery gradually is not recharged fully
4. No start condition begins to happen
5. Jumping the battery works, but the battery doesn't get charged
Here is what to do:
1. Recharge battery
2. Fix field wire connection
3. Clean battery connections...not the surfaces, but the actual metal to metal terminal contact points
4. Turn the igniton "on" and confirm the field wire is OK by the light on the dash
5. Try to start the motor
If it starts, make sure the dash light goes out
If it doesn't crank, then get a jump and go a store and buy a new battery
Tell us how you make out.
