Something that can happen on 5 speeds that have been apart is that the snap ring which locates the splined sleeve which connects the front lay gear and the cluster gear escapes it's groove. The sleeve then slides forward and the cluster gear is no longer driven so no torque is transmitted to the main shaft. The input shaft is directly connected to the main shaft via the fifth gear hub and synchro assembly when in fifth gear so you will still have motion in fifth (but you'll probably kill the engine trying to take off). Remove the forward most cover plate on the passenger side of the transaxle to see the snap ring and sleeve. Good luck
