how much gas in the tank? fill it and see if the symptoms change. Also, some 89s have the older pump, some the newer. remove the rear deck to see the top of the pump, 2 torx screws between the back seat and the hinge where the deck opens, pull towards the rear to unhook. The old style pump has a nice bright 19mm gold bolt/nut on it. The new style has the while 90 degree connectors to the black fuel pipes.
If you have the old style you have a prepump, the does not have it.
The prepump keeps the canister full, especially at lower tank levels. What is the most gas you've put in the car when it starts stuttering like out of gas? If never more than about 12 gallons then the prepump is high on the list. If the fuel starvation goes away with full or near full take, again most likely the prepump.
