Hello, Paul
I finally had time to have a look under the dash yesterday.
Unfortunately, I quickly discovered that since I have an SPG that the dash pad and housing around the steering wheel is quite different fom what you described. I then discovered--and now foretunately--that I could see the needle bearing and a good deal of the shaft without pulling out the dash knee pad. I lubricated the heck out of what I could reach, turning the wheel, etc. and sraying again and again. Now, no problem--smooth as silk--the bearing had all the needles--did I dodge a bullet?.
I did discover another item: It seesm that the former (and first owner) of my car had the turn signal lever assembly replaced and you can tell it by the presence of a very large coupling that seems to have caught on the interior foam of the dash pad, even chewed out some chunks of it. Could this be the source of my "binding"--I still hear a slight sound, but now much less of a pinched feeling on the shaft. Who knows?
Anyway, a good result for nw, and thanks very much for your assistance.
