What does your modified base boost setting measure? As a simple rule of thumb, you get twice the boost than your base boost setting. So, if you have it set at the normal 6psi, you could expect at least 12psi in full charge for stock settings.
When you had it set in the "normal" setting or stock, and it boosted up into the red more quickly, you were probably seeing boost spike....the hysterisis of the system. You can help eliminate that with a Dawes device or SMBC ( series MBC ). That way, you could return your base boost to a normal or stock setting of 6psi, and set the Dawes at 10psi. It would be smoother and not overboost or "overshoot" the boost.
Boost taper is a normal occurance unless it is emphasized by maladjustment. Set your base boost correctly, and get a Dawes device.
The link provided calls it a BBC Basic Boost Controller.....
