Why can problems never be straightforward?

For the last two months I've been battling with a bad idle on my car (85 Turbo). I was driving it to school one morning and experienced a loss of power. I was able to park it and noticed it was running extremely rich and had a very lumpy idle. A few weeks afterward, my FPR decided to crap out on me too.
So far I've replaced the FPR and O2 sensor with brand new units. The idle smooths out (although still runs very rich and misses a little) when I disconnect the AMM. I've swapped out 3 AMMs and all have given me the same results. Distributor cap and rotor and also spark plugs are only a year old. I've checked resistances on the plug wires and ignition coil and they are within spec.
Only odd noise coming from the engine is a tick-tick-tick. Ruled out injectors by briefly disconnecting them one by one. Noise never went away when I did that so I'm assuming lifters are the culprit. Don't know if this would have any influence on the problem or not. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. This has gone on long enough and I want my car back!
Thanks in advance.
