My '88 is headed for 400k km (248,548 miles) sometime early next year, I hope.
All the rust on this car is superficial to date. This is my winter car, and NY is the king of trotting out the salt shaker as soon as anyone sneezes because people expect to drive through the winter at unreasonable speeds on bald summer tires. The bottoms of the doors are gone and the fender lips are starting to rot. The trailing edges of the hood are going. The front fenders have some spots along the hood seam and around the side turn signal holes. There has been a hole in the under-floor area of my trunk for a couple of years because the drains clogged up. There is also a hole in the small area ahead of the right rear wheel well on the bottom, behind the rear door. The corners of the trunk have light surface rust, and the fuel door (replaced in '05) apparently didn't get enough paint.
The important stuff is all there. The floorpan is fine. The A-arm attachment points (so far) are solid. The seat attachment points are solid. That's why I'm keeping the car for a few more years. I'm also looking for four doors and a hood, for real this time. The car looks pretty terrible (what do you want for 21 salty New York winters and 230,000 miles???) but structurally she's fine.
I've had some old-car reliability problems (brake line along the rear axle rusted through in '07, one fuel line started seeping in '07, and the engine compartment grounds have been difficult the past two years) but I'm still in the game. My donor-car transmission (on its third car) has what I estimate to be 260k (miles) on it. It makes a little preload noise, but it always has, and it hasn't changed in the last six years. I change the fluid every few years to avoid killing the synchronizers on cold days or the gears and bearings on hot ones.
The engine runs better than ever too. This summer we have some trips to take.
