Belt squeal under load-- HB? Posted by Arabiflora [Email] (#1129) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Arabiflora) on Tue, 24 Feb 2009 00:15:33 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |

I've searched the board for diagnostics and will do the chalk test to see if it is, in fact, the harmonic balancer that is to account for the "belt squeal" that I've been hearing of late.
What's curious to me, and may be equally diagnostic if it evokes useful responses here, is that the squeal, though subdued (not like a bad or loose PS belt) happens only under load, as when I go through the gears after a red light; moreover, it suddenly drops-out, at which point I notice a rather sudden increase in acceleration. It's as if the old girl has (re)gained her legs. The noise also goes away immediately upon decelleration or clutch engagement; revving the engine without load does not recapitulate the symptom, so troubleshooting in the garage is kindof a bitch.
It's hard for me to imagine that a loose or worn belt could affect HP, but some stray neuron or three reminds me that the Hall sensor to the distributor MAY be mounted in the vicinity of the HB on my car (as an '88, it's kindof on the cusp in many regards) and if the HB was going out that might make sense?
Any pointers welcome...
