Smoking engine / Blown water pump? Posted by Pete [Email] (#2000) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Pete) on Tue, 3 Mar 2009 17:58:57 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi. My 91 900 convertible has been making a whining noise for some time. It had recently gotten much worse (pitch raises and lowers with engine power). In any case, today I started up when the car was quite cold (outside temp ~30F, had sat for 9 hours), and after about ~30 seconds of driving something popped (not exactly a pop, but don't know how else to explain it). The whining noise went away completely.
About ~30 seconds later, I notice something in the car is smoking. I couldn't tell where it was coming from. I was now on the road and the nearest gas station was ~1 mile away on a road with 55 speed limit. The car had no adverse performance whatsoever. I sped up to get the smoke away and get to the gas station quickly. By the time I reached the gas station, the car was no longer smoking. I opened the hood and while there was a smell, I saw nothing unusual. I then drove the remaining ~15 minutes home without incident and the engine remained in the lower half of normal temp. The whine is now gone.
My question is what happened? Did I blow the water pump and could that have in any way caused this smoke? Is the car okay to drive?
Appreciate any thoughts.
