It looks to have some sort of plastic protruding from the boss in the tranny side cover into which it sticks, so I'd guess it's a force fit, maybe someone replaced original seal with something else.
I clamped a big vise grips onto it at the bottom and have tried wiggling it around to get some movement but nothing gives.
AM I RIGHT TO THINK that if I keep at it, tapping on the vise grips, prying them up and out of that boss, the tube will come out of the tranny side cover? I really don't want to ALSO pull that side cover, I've got enough things apart as it is.
What I'm really up to is, replacing a rusted-out upper A-arm, passenger side. Old one is all unbolted, but EXHAUST DOWNPIPE needs to come out of the way for A-arm to come out. I've got all four flange-to-manifold bolts off, but downpipe won't drop down enuf to come off the manifold studs with that dip stick tube in there.
I got the little bolt out that held dipstick tube to manifold. Its nut and head had rusted down from 10mm to 3/8".
This car, 130,000 miles and still a looker above, clean of dents, shiny original paint, NO dash cracks, no rust visible even at door bottoms or edges of wheel wells, was stored in a heated garage in salted roads country. It's a tragedy how rusty that makes everything down underneath, brakes, a-arms, axles, tie rods, shocks.
A guy flew it over some railroad tracks and when it came down, it sagged and didn't bounce up again. Both upper a-arms collapsed into twisted rusty metal lace. (Bottom a-arms had just heavy surface rust, rat-a-tatted and ground it off and they still look pretty beefy.)
