The previous owner of my 85 told he jumped the fan relay, which means when the ac button in cabin is pressed both fans run, it's good practice to run the ac if you feel your going to overheat that way at least one fan is running. When in doubt of overheating like heavy traffic or city driving I leave circulation dial always on and if needle climbs I put heat control to hottest, this seems to drop temp gauge right away. Safest bet is new radiator and thermostat. Good luck.
