Greeting fellow C900s,

While slowly backing out of a driveway and turning hard right (moving steering wheel counter-clockwise), I broke part of my lower control arm. I knew something was wrong when I heard the tell-tale loud thunk followed by a loss of steering. I had heard the infamous thunk before but did not think that it was anything serious because I was not able to identify any cracks in my control arms. Before the control arm broke, I mostly heard thunks while reversing and turning at the same time.

After inspecting the broken control arm I did notice that the cracked area was covered in years of gunk. So if there was a crack in the arm (and I’m sure there was) I could not see it. The lesson here is that one should always thoroughly clean the control arms, then inspect.

I’m about to place an order with eEuro and thought that I’d check with you all first.

I plan to order both lower control arms (ScanTech), new ball joint screws and nuts, lower control arm bushings, and a set of sway bar bushings. I replaced the ball joints and shocks about 3 months ago so there’s no need to replace those.

Questions:
Is there anything else you’d suggest I purchase for this job?

It seems like a straight-forward DIY but I’m very open to suggestions you might have about replacing the lower control arms. Does one simply remove the six nuts, lower ball joint bolts/nuts, and then replace with new control arm?

I have the infamous vibration on acceleration and I’ve been told by two mechanics that my inner drivers are most likely worn. One mechanic said that it’s probably my passenger-side inner driver. Since I’ll have the lower control arm off I’m thinking about tackling this. Is it easy to replace the inner-drive if I get the parts? What parts would I need besides the inner driver and tripod bearing?

And oh, what really sucks is that just the day before I installed a full set of 16” Super Aeros fitted with new Dunlop 205/45 tires! I was ready to cruise then this happened.

Thanks in advance for any feedback you provide.
