The reason there are a lot of convertibles is that they tended to be weekend cars and didn't get a lot of miles racked up on them. Since they're "toy" cars the economy probably has an effect on pricing--it's a good time to buy one. I would take the time to find the car you want--car shopping is a lot easier than swapping trnasmissions, beleive me. I've owned several C900 automatics and if properly cared for they last about as long as the 5 speeds. I don't find them objectionble to drive--mine were all convertibles and since I live in a congested beach town, I'm more into a laid back cruising mode. The only issue is that the mileage they get is pretty sucky. Automatics were less likely to be rode hard and put up wet, which is why there are more of them at this point. It costs about the same to convert to a 5 speed as replace an auto that has gone bad--figure about $3K. I would make the effort to buy what you want to begin with.
