MOMO wheel install.....not going well. Any tips?

1988 vert...I picked up a 4-spoke Momo SAAB wheel. I loosened the center nut on my existing wheel until it was almost off, then yanked hard on the wheel; it loosened up easily, and I was able to remove it, exposing the clockspring and splined column.
When I put my adapter in place (same one you see for $67 on the auction site if you search for "SAAB MOMO"), I lower it down until the splines begin to mesh. I put the nut on, and begin tightening the nut, but this adapter just doesn't seem to want to start sliding down the splines. I haven't REALLY wrenched on it yet, seeing as the original wheel came loose so easily.
I've used a set of micrometers to measure the opening in the end of my old wheel, and the adapter, and they both read around .750"; same as the fattest part of the column rod.
Is there ANY way the spline count is different? Should I just buckle down and wrench hard on it? I just did NOT want to mess anything up.
