Cliff, In my experience when starter motors fail, they drag and barely turn the car over, but only seen that happen once and I have owned a good may older vehicles.
If the teeth are wearing you could get grinds or slippage when attempting to start the car, but here again I have owned 8 Saabs of which 4 had over 200k miles and haven't seen that happen yet.
If the solenoid is bad (the induction coil that throws the starting gear into the flywheel gear) is bad or has a week connection it can allow the gears to disengage, but usually this will not have a pattern and will even sometimes start w/ no occurrence while others it will continually repeat and eventually you will just hear the starter spin w/ no engine movement. I have only seen this happen in my Saabs that were pre-H block models.
How many miles are on your car?
