I've never done an '88 but a couple things you'll probably have to deal with. There is a green disk around the ignition cylinder that is supposed to light up. It's lit by a little bulb. The bulb housing actually snugs into an opening on the underside of the console housing. You'll need to reach under to unplug it as you are taking the console off. The green disk just sits loosely around the ignition cylinder. Note it's location and be careful when putting the console back down that it stays in place. The console will come off easier if you take the shifter out (but it's not necessary). The shifter is held to the shifter housing below the console with three torx screws. It just lifts straight out.
Again, not sure about '88 but the consoles I've removed were only held on by 4 screws. Two in back accessed by removing the rear ashtray, and two in front accessed by removing the shifter boot. The ones in the front are small and easily dropped and lost in the neatherworlds under the carpet. Be careful taking them out and especially putting them back.
