Restoring spoilers?

My 93 Turbo Convertible has a spoiler on the back that wraps around (in pieces, of course) to the windshield. It is made of a pliable material that used to have a smooth coating over it that one day just rinsed off in the rain (other posts here have talked about it, so I realize I'm not crazy for thinking something changed...).
Now, when I clean it, it's like trying to wash sandpaper. And I'm sure it's deteriorating so by the time my great-grandkids get the car in 2075 the spoiler will be...spoiled. :-)
A painter I had look at the car said that he'd spray it with black and then clearcoat to refinish it. Not sure I quite like that idea, but I guess it'd be better than leaving it alone. And easier than covering it a coat of carbon fiber...
But I wonder - is the original coating available anywhere? It must exist, right, and it must have been applied to the parts, not been integral. What was it? Can we get a hold of it?
Or is there a spray-on rubber out there that would work?
What have you guys done? Is this a FAQ?
Thanks!
Chris
