88 center console fitting

I am having problems fitting the plastic center console piece into my 88 spg. when I took it out it didn't look right in that it was jammed down between the seat mounts. as i try to re-install it, it looks as if i have the wrong console in the car. the seats are the type with side lever for moving up and down and have 4 bolt down points. when the center console is put down between the seat mounts it physically is too wide to fit between the seat mounts. to get the console all the way down to screw the console in you have to squeeze the sides of it together and shove it down between the mounts. i tried installing the driver seat with the console in and i can hardly get the seat mounts to line up with the mounting points in the floor.
now, i have removed and installed many of these consoles on other cars and have never seen this problem. it seems to me that this console is the wrong one entirely. the little research i can do, i can't see that there is a change in consoles until the later years, '90 or '91.
any ideas?
