Indeed... EGR helps cool down the cylinders.
While PCV is good for the engine, recycling PCV crap is actually bad for it - carbon and other debris that would normally be cleaned out by the air filter goes right back into the engine, and oily mist coats the turbo, sensors, throttlebody, and goops up the intercooler. It also adversely affects emissions - it's hard to regulate the fuel mixture properly when you have a bunch of errant hydrocarbons cycling through the engine. Many modern cars have a real oil/air separator, because it's difficult or impossible to meet modern emissions standards with an unfiltered PCV system.
I am looking to go that way, but I really want to understand the existing system before messing with it. I don't want to do half the job, nor do I want to upset the existing functionality.
