Darn, subject field is to short for me to put all my thoughts there :)
I mean there can happen lots of things to a (even well-known) car that can cause it to stop and not to move further until fixed.
Belts (easy fix)
Ignition (should be an easy fix in most cases)
Suspension (this can be a big one, search for low arm failure reports on this BB)
Brakes
Even if there's no voltage coming from the alternator (my last failure that happen during my last long trip) you can't drive it for more then 200 miles (100 miles if you've got a single batt; I had two batts joined in parallel - the 2nd one was designed to power music stuff).
Oh, my favorite - you can't move further if you can't shift gears. This one happened to me about a year ago and was caused by a worn damper they use in the gear selector rod. I was able to drive about 500 miles with this failure and only II and V gears available and fortunately it was an easy fix (I was lucky to use hockey puck to make the new damper).
Surely all these things can happen to any car make but I bet Fred just wanted to bump you a bit and he really caught you. Maybe he is just too jealous that you were able to find a darn good SPG and Canada, huh? Btw I bet I'm also able to find a good SPG in Canada (or even two or three of them) but shipping to Moscow will be definitely an overkill for this project. Or a self-ride.
Zig
P.S.
In my case there also will be HUUUUUUUUUUUUGE customs fees. And probably I even won't be able to import those cars legally at all cause of emissions restrictions.
