AC high temp switch pipe/housing replacement

I just replaced my radiator and upper radiator hoses. The pipe between the two radiator hoses that houses the AC high temp cut out switch was rusted to HELL! Currently I am not running the AC, compressor is out of car, is it possible to just put in a blank piece of pipe in place of the pipe/housing with no AC running? Has anyone done this? What material is best, aluminum or steel?
FYI for those running really high on the temp gauge with an old radiator and having headaches as to what to replace... REPLACE the radiator! I drained the old radiator out and rust and muck came out. The new radiator and 82 degree temp switches keep everything really cool, temp gauge never goes above 1/3 now.
