I won't even try to guess on the cost of having a shop do it. Mind you, 90% of the cost of the job is labor. If you can do 90% of that, you'll save yourself a whole lot of money. Surface prep is what its all about. If the surface isn't perfect, the paint can never be. The paint will show up all your miscues once applied.
Good paint is expensive. About 8 years ago, I was enrolled in an auto body class at the local vo-tech. I did most of the work on my 99, stripped a lot of stuff off of it, and we had a nice shop, all for about $125 a semester. When the car was ready for paint, they sent me to an automotive paint supplier. I had them get me the same color the car was (Dorado Brown). Single stage, no clear coat, one gallon, and my materials costs were over $450. Metallics will be more. You'll also spend more if you want to apply multiple coats, or do a clear coat.
If you're willing to do a lot of the work, and have another car to use (you'll be taking off lenses, bumpers, glass, etc.) Shop the job around to see what the local shops will do for you, and what you can save by doing parts of it yourself (also know what that does to any guarantees on their work...).
But it can be a very rewarding experience to do it yourself.
