1988 3 door cruise control

Hi. I am trying to get my cruise control to work. After figuring out how to get the lower dash off a couple of weeks ago,( which would have made a recent heater valve replacement much easier -- but I digress), I took a cursory look at the hoses and connectors on the cruis control unit. Some hoses were cracked so I just cut off the bad ends and reattached them. Relatively easy. There was still a slight vacuum leak but I didn't have any new cutoff switches to put in there. I thought I would be in good shape once I got some new switches later on because the cruise would hold at 60 mph but then gradually decrease in speed. At around 35 mhp on the flats, it seemed to work just fine. However, today I put in two new cutoff switches and there was plenty of vacuum to hold the throttle down. No leaks. But, in a test drive, the cruise speed could not be set; it just kept accelerating like a runaway train. I have the newer turn signal stick because it has the TIP (whatever that is) function on it. ( I guess they don't make the old stick any longer). The turn signal stick appears to be wired correctly: there are the four wires that fit into the plastic connector. Additionally the speed sensor is also hooked up to the back of the instrument panel.
Anyone have an idea? Thanks in advance!
