The 79 (should be metal on a 900)& 80 (change to plastic tank) tanks were the same size as the 99's metal tank. In 1981, Saab changed the rear floor of the car, moved the "donut" spare to under the carpeted panel. When they did this, they made a small space for a few more liters of gas. With a plastic tank, this is really easy to do, they basically added a "bump" to the aft part of the tank, which makes the under-floor space smaller in the 81- 900s.
Thus, without changing the floorpan (whether it be by welding or the sledge), a 1988 tank won't go into a 1979 or 1980 900, nor a 99.
I presume you want to replace the metal tank?
